Download Dirty Grandpa (Unrated) [Blu-ray + DVD + Digital] 1080p BluRay x264 DTS-JYK

Robert De Niro and Zac Efron get down and dirtier in this unrated version of the raunchy comedy about a wild road trip shared by an uptight guy and his foul-mouthed granddad.

1. Let me say right off the top, this movie will be hated by critics and will probably make many "Worst of 2016" lists at the end of the year. And if you hate this movie too, I honestly don't blame you. I understand.

2. I usually don't really like movies like this. I honestly only went to see it because I was interested in seeing what kind of a pair Zac Efron and Robert De Niro would make together. In a great surprise to me, I actually liked it.

3. Robert De Niro plays Richard, an old man whose wife just died. As an attempt at bonding with his estranged grandson Jason (Zac Efron), he coerces Jason to drive him to Florida. But Richard immediately turns into a lecherous, foul mouthed weirdo that Jason just can't handle.

4. For better or worse, this is De Niro's movie. Many people will be horrified that a Hollywood legend like De Niro would portray a character like this. Between you and me, I suspect this is behind a lot of the critics' hatred for this movie - it's "beneath" De Niro, even demeaning. I mean, his name equals Taxi Driver, The Deer Hunter, and Raging Bull, for God's sake. Not a raging pervert that does a Number 3 on screen.

But If De Niro was aware that people would disapprove, he sure doesn't show it. He plays Richard with insensitive glee, giving it his all. And honestly, he has to be a great actor to pull this role off.

5. Zac Efron holds his own well against De Niro. But just as important, he's a really good sport - he gets made fun of a lot for his good looks in this movie. Many characters think he's a lesbian.

6. The movie was directed by Dan Mazer, who usually works with Sascha Baron Cohen, from Borat and Bruno fame. That should give you a better idea of the type of humor you're getting.

7. Like all movies of this type, not every joke works. But plenty of them do. There were a few scenes that I was laughing so hard I gasped for air. I think the movie knew that it was riding a fine line between being funny and just being offensive, so it jumped in with both feet. It went farther than I thought it would.

8. The biggest problem with the movie is that there's an unnecessary romantic subplot that brings the laughs to a screeching halt sometimes. It's like when you're driving and you hit those speed-bumps in the road that are much higher than they need to be.

9. If you like family comedies, or if you think Hollywood legends should hold themselves to a certain standard of decorum, or if you just hate the F-word, then you should not see this movie. But if you want a filthy, immature comedy that you laugh at even though you know you shouldn't, then this is your movie.

Download The Intern (Blu-ray + DVD + ULTRAVIOLET) 1080p BluRay x264 DTS-JYK

Intern, The (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital HD UltraViolet Combo Pack)

This well crafted comedy comes straight from the MGM playbook circa 1940. Think of the great, light and light hearted Carry Grant comedies and you will get the flavor, the style and the charm of this 21st edition of that great old formula. It still works and in this case it still works very well.

Robert De Niro acts here as Ben, a retired widower of some 70 years of age. Since his retirement and bereavement he has traveled a bit, he has taken some classes and learned to speak Chinese. But now he feels at loose ends. He experiences the tedium of empty days with nothing special to do.

Anne Hathaway has created a little internet company in Brooklyn New York. The young wife and mother has the dilemma of successful start up businesses, in this case a business that sends clothing that ‘actually fits’ to women across the land. The genius behind the successful business is not a business manager. She is a passionate innovator, a brilliant motivator but she cannot cope with a business that has grown from one person, herself, to over 250 employees in a year and a half.

She drowns in her own success. Her backers want to bring in a professional manager to enter the next stage of the life of the company. One of he hundreds of 20 something bright lights suggests that the company employ a few interns but with a twist. If the company brings in a few retired folks their wisdom, knowledge and experience might just help the company to greater success. Enter Ben, the De Niro character.

You pretty much can guess what happens from here on out. Ben, the calm voice of experience, nicely balances the fire of the determined but untrained young woman. What we like is the very sharp acting from Anne Hathaway. This may be her best role so far strictly in terms of her acting performance and that says a lot.

She has turned in some sparkling efforts in a number of well received films. “The Intern” might not have the high drama of some other of her films but the overwhelming pleasantness of the film over all and her superb performance make it memorable. De Niro continues his career and here acts with the muted restraint of an elder who finds himself in a junior position. Always excellent he remains so here.

Also of note we receive the gift of Rene Russo, a watchable actress in a small but charming role as the company masseuse. Yes, the new company is just hip enough to have a company masseuse. Many of the other young cast members will seem familiar from their roles in various TV comedies.
Writer/director Nancy Meyers had both the inspiration to write the script and the directorial control to oversee the final output.

She has a string of modest sized films which have found their audiences to extremely profitable success. She crafted such hits as “What Women Want” and “It’s Complicated”.
Rarely in a film do we have a chance to meet and like a series of characters, a list which grows as the film goes on. Even the minor supporting cast members bring their small bits of the story into sharp focus as real people that we can know, however briefly, and to appreciate.
This reminds us of the great films of yesteryear. We like the characters very much. We have no distractions from the story of naked people doing what they do or violence of any sort or of foul language. Instead we get an interesting story played by actors who are allowed to act to the extent of their abilities, another rarity.
“The Intern” gets a big three and a half saw blades. It runs for two hours and one minute.

The “PG-13” rated movie brought in a very strong $32 million over the opening weekend on a $40 million budget. Nancy Meyers has made another movie that people will gladly watch.

This heroic action-thriller is based on the extraordinary true story of the greatest small-boat rescue in Coast Guard history. Download Supergirl: Season 1 [Blu-ray] 1080p BluRay x264 DTS-JYK

Didn't know what to expect but when the first episode premiered on CBS in 1080i it was the best channel for HD. Supergirl happens to be part of the DC Universe and their sister station appears to be KBCW which also airs Arrow and The Flash and now DC's Legends of Tomorrow. These three shows have been stimulating so far. The first season and second season of Arrow were pretty good story wise. DC's LOT is shaping to be pretty good but I feel they made need to add a few more legends into the mix. At the moment The Flash is the best show so far thanks to the Time Travel and Earth 1 and 2 and Multiverse storylines.

Back to Supergirl. I found the Season Premiere actually got me tearing a bit in some parts very similar to Brandon Routh's Superman Returns (A shame they didn't give him another movie) sequence with the airplane save. The musical score also deserves credit for its emotional impact. If Season 1 is any indication of them keeping the quality up I can see this getting easily approved for a second season. I liked the fact they brought on Dean Cain (Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman) to play her foster father and Helen Slater (Supergirl Movie 1984) to play her foster mother. These Super people related actors add to the authenticity of the show.

Melissa Benoist who plays the current Supergirl does a remarkable job making you like her despite her social awkwardness. Helen Slater's version had a very naive, trusting, and innocent take on humanity which I also liked but the very bubbly Melissa Benoist's version of Linda Danvers is just as lovable. It's interesting how she spills the beans of her true identity from the get go instead of the typical superhero hidden identity only known by the hero/heroine and parents we typically get stretched out. Not that wearing glasses and bunning your hair is really that much of a obvious difference in facial structure to keep your identity secret. :)

I see the next episode will feature the Flash crossing over to Supergirl. Can it get any better? I hope to see Supergirl crossing over to the Flash or other DC shows as well.

I think this show can easily get up to three seasons and more if it can continually provide better storylines as it matures. If anything I would expect a huge female fan base to help keep the show going. There hasn't been a female superheroine on TV that I can remember since Linda Carter's Wonder Woman. There was a possible Wonder Woman TV show with Adrianne Palicki 5 years ago that never got to air but I'm glad Supergirl made it which may pave the way for Wonder Woman to return in the future.

I'm definitely awaiting to buy Supergirl on Blu-ray when it comes out. I would like them to also release a Blu-ray version of the Helen Slater Supergirl movie from 1984 which would add to the hype of the show. Although Supergirl the movie didn't quite excite as much as Superman 1 and 2 did it still has a fond place in my heart.

Here's a hint combine Supergirl Season 1 with Supergirl the movie as a special Limited Edition Blu-ray combo release. Personally I'd buy both individually but if it can help generate sales to combine them I see it as a win win.

It would be interesting if this series when it ends one day they can have Melissa Benoist do the Supergirl movie or even consider making the Supergirl movie while the TV show is still on the air during its hiatus. Think X-files and you know what I mean.

Download Zoolander No. 2 [Blu-ray] 1080p BluRay x264 DTS-JYK

I don't know why others are so critical, I found this movie hilarious. There was not even one boring scene throughout the movie. Was it over the boarder silly? YES! and I loved it.

The movie starts off with a recap on what had happened since the first movie ended. With Zoolanders wife dying from a freak accident, to his son being ripped out of his home by child services over spaghetti making skills, to Zoolander living as a hermit crab. Then the movie moves on to Rome, where Hansel and Zoolander try to make a return to the fashion world and reconnecting with Zolanders son..and Mugatu. There are plenty of new quotes to be repeated from even this movie.

This is a movie, where you kick back and just laugh, without thinking of reality and the everyday problems. In my opinion it has even better jokes than the first movie. It has the same humor as 21 Jump Street or the Hangover movies. You never expect, what they will say or do next. Ben Stiller's character is exactly the same as in the first movie. The plot is even better than the first was.

The first movie struggled in the beginning as well, being called juvenile and dumb, now we know it as one of the best movies Ben Stiller has made. Hopefully with time, Zoolander 2, will get the same status.

It is rated PG13 - living in California, the rating is accurate, meaning majority of the kids younger than that are very aware and educated about much more than this movie can offer. There is no sex scenes, just dirty talk in couple places. So if your kids are aware of the human natural needs, they are fine to watch it. But if you would not let them watch the first zoolander, skip this one as well, as this is one notch up.

In The Gambia, West Africa, in 1750 Kunta Kinte is born to Omoro Kinte (Thalmus Rasulala), a Mandinka warrior, and his wife, Binta (Cicely Tyson). When Kunta (LeVar Burton) reaches the age of 15, he and a group of other adolescent boys take part in tribal manhood training, ending with a ceremony, after which they become recognized as men and Mandinka warriors.

While trying to carry out a task to catch a bird and take it home unharmed, Kunta sees white men carrying firearms, along with their black collaborators. Later, while fetching wood outside his village to make a drum for his younger brother, Kunta is captured by black collaborators under the direction of white men. He is then sold to a slave trader and placed aboard a ship under the command of Capt. Thomas Davies (Edward Asner) for a three-month journey to Colonial America. During the voyage a group of rebels among the human cargo try but fail to stage a mutiny and to take over the ship.

The ship eventually arrives in Annapolis, Maryland in 1767, where the captured Africans are sold at auction as slaves. John Reynolds (Lorne Greene), a plantation owner from Spotsylvania County, Virginia, near Fredericksburg, buys Kunta and gives him the name Toby. Reynolds assigns an older slave, Fiddler (Louis Gossett Jr.), to teach Kunta to speak English and to train him in the ways of living and working as a chattel slave.

Kunta, in a persistent struggle to become free again, makes several unsuccessful attempts to escape. Additionally, to preserve his Mandinka heritage and maintain his Mandinka roots, he does not want to change his name. An overseer, Ames (Vic Morrow) gathers the slaves and directs one of them to whip Kunta after his latest attempt to escape and to continue whipping him until he finally acknowledges his new name. For events that occur in 1775, between the above period and the post-Revolutionary War, where the next section begins,

Download Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital HD) 1080p BluRay x264 DTS-JYK

Forever enchanting and inspiring, SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS embodies The Walt Disney Signature Collection's legacy of animation. In this epic story of love and friendship, the kind and beautiful princess SNOW WHITE wins the hearts of the Seven Dwarfs and triumphs over the evil plans of a wicked Queen. Share the movie called "The Greatest Animated Film Of All Time," in High Definition Blu-ray and for the first time ever on Digital HD, with special features for the entire family!

The home video BD/DVD release of the latest home video version of Disney’s 1937 classic full length animated film “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” , will not be released until February 2nd, but – as a journalist – I was provided with an advance screener in exchange for an objective review.

You’ve probably seen the film so there is no reason to spend time on it. It’s a CLASSIC. But this is first time it is available on Digital HD and “Disney Movies Anywhere” and they added about 30 minutes of NEW bonus material, so that’s what I’ll concentrate on here.

If you don’t already own the “Diamond Edition” release (from 2009) you will find literally HOURS of bonus featurettes here. These run more than the 83 minute length of the film. If you already have the Diamond edition, here’s what’s new:

1) A four minute “in Walt’s Words” short which has the audio of an interview with Disney in the 1960s melded with archival footage and stills.
2) A seven minute “Iconography” short which concentrates on three “artists/fashion n designers” who are Making money from “Snow White” tie ins. This is –honestly – a throw away, in my opinion.
3) A five-minute short on designing the characters with current Disney Animators paying tribute to the original artists.
4) A 4 ½ minute short (cross promoting Disney Channel star Sofia Carson) which gives you “7 Facts” you may not know about Snow White
5) “Snow White in 70 Seconds” – which “raps the plot” in – ACTUALLY – 61 seconds. (not sure why they call it “70 seconds”.
6) A 3 ½ minute “alternate sequence – using story boards for “the Prince Meeting Snow White”

The colors are bright and the transfers are great and – if you had your kids watching the previous disc, it’s probably scratched. So you “might want to upgrade”. If, like me, you don’t have the film on BD, you’ll get a lot for your money here with all the old and new bonuses.

I hope you found this review both informative and helpful.

Download The Dark Knight Trilogy: Ultimate Collector's Edition (Batman Begins / The Dark Knight / The Dark Knight Rises) [Blu-ray] 1080p BluRay x264 DTS-JYK

Batman Begins: Batman Begins explores the origins of the Batman legend and the Dark Knight's emergence as a force for good in Gotham. In the wake of his parents' murder, disillusioned industrial heir Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) travels the world seeking the means to fight injustice and turn fear against those who prey on the fearful. He returns to Gotham and unveils his alter-ego: Batman, a masked crusader who uses his strength, intellect and an array of high tech deceptions to fight the sinister forces that threaten the city. The Dark Knight: The follow-up to Batman Begins, The Dark Knight reunites director Christopher Nolan and star Christian Bale, who reprises the role of Batman/Bruce Wayne in his continuing war on crime. With the help of Lt. Jim Gordon and District Attorney Harvey Dent, Batman sets out to destroy organized crime in Gotham for good. The triumvirate proves effective, but soon find themselves prey to a rising criminal mastermind known as The Joker, who thrusts Gotham into anarchy and forces Batman closer to crossing the fine line between hero and vigilante. Heath Ledger stars as archvillain The Joker, and Aaron Eckhart plays Dent. Maggie Gyllenhaal joins the cast as Rachel Dawes. Returning from Batman Begins are Gary Oldman as Gordon, Michael Caine as Alfred and Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox. The Dark Knight Rises: It has been eight years since Batman vanished into the night, turning, in that instant, from hero to fugitive. Assuming the blame for the death of D.A. Harvey Dent, the Dark Knight sacrificed everything for what he and Commissioner Gordon both hoped was the greater good. For a time the lie worked, as criminal activity in Gotham City was crushed under the weight of the anti-crime Dent Act. But everything will change with the arrival of a cunning cat burglar with a mysterious agenda. Far more dangerous, however, is the emergence of Bane, a masked terrorist whose ruthless plans for Gotham drive Bruce out of his self-imposed exile. But even if he dons the cape and cowl again, Batman may be no match for Bane.

]]>Disregard all the naysayers claiming this is a money grab. No, it's called having a choice. Not everyone wants the Super Duper Ultra Rare Limited Collector's Edition, that's often filled with a bunch of useless physical items. Some people just want to have the trilogy and nothing more. For $30 (currently), you get just that, and even a little bit more.

You get the following in the Blu-ray edition:

Disc 1: Batman Begins Feature Film
Disc 2: The Dark Knight Feature Film
Disc 3: The Dark Knight Special Features
Disc 4: The Dark Knight Rises Feature Film
Disc 5: The Dark Knight Rises Special Features

PLUS you get a 64 Page excerpted (i.e. shortened) version of the wonderful book: "The Art and Making of The Dark Knight Trilogy"

That is tremendous bang for your buck! Not only with the movies, but there are hours and hours of special features included too, including a documentary about the Batmobile. The Ultimate Collector's Edition, which won't be released for another year will no doubt cost at least twice as much. The only thing I have a problem with here is the cover art. It just doesn't look anything like Nolan's Batman.

The DVD version of the Trilogy is a 3-disc set and lacks many of the extras found in the Blu-ray set, but it does look nicer. It has a lenticular cover featuring the Batman sign from all 3 movies. It looks really cool compared to the cover used for the Blu-ray edition.

All in all, this is a wonderful set to get if you don't own any of the movies yet. Heck, even if you do, it's still a great value if you just want The Dark Knight Rises. Consider TDKR sells for around $20-25, for just a few bucks more you get the 2 preceding films, and a book. You really can't go wrong here!

Here is a list of the Special Features that included. The list may not be all-inclusive. The set has no exclusive features, but rather, the same ones that come with the individual releases

Download Ip Man 3 [Blu-ray] 1080p BluRay x264 DTS-JYK

Donnie Yen (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 2) ignites the screen in a return to the role that made him an icon - as Ip Man, the real-life Wing Chun grandmaster who mentored Bruce Lee. In this explosive third installment of the blockbuster martial arts series, when a band of brutal gangsters led by a crooked property developer (Mike Tyson) make a play to take over the city, Master Ip is forced to take a stand. Fists will fly as some of the most incredible fight scenes ever filmed play out on the big screen.

Ip Man 3 brings back Donnie Yen, to reprise his role as the undefeated, machine-gun punching master of Wing Chun. I was slightly wary while watching, because I wasn't a fan of Ip Man 2. That second film, simply felt like a rehash of the first movie - Ip Man schooling his peers, and then fighting the foreign devil(s). I was hoping this 3rd movie tackled a different antagonist/story, and for the most part, it does.

Keynotes:
- From my observations, the movie plays out into 3 distinct acts. The first part revolves around a school. The second part involves Chinese gangsters, and of course 'foreign devils'. The final part is personal for Ip Man, and I felt it was the best segment of the film.

- Mike Tyson does have minor acting roles, and of course the anticipated fight scene with Ip Man. While the acting sequences were forgettable, the versus scene was great. Mike Tyson really shined as a boxing combatant, and held his own against Ip Man.

- Actor Jin Zhang, who plays Ip Man's main rival, is my highlight for this movie. He plays a practitioner of Wing Chun, but with an opposing moral compass to Ip Man. It was a joy to watch him lay the destruction to those who'd stand in his way, with remorseless efficiency. I recognized him from this movie, Spl II: Time for Consequences [Blu-ray], where he plays a formidable villain. Also in a smaller role, Jin Zhang appears in Grandmaster, The [Blu-ray] as well.

- Ip Man's wife, actress Lynn Hung, plays a greater/memorable role in this film.

- While not specifically named in character, a young Bruce Lee has a few cameos.

In conclusion, I felt Ip Man 3 was a good continuation/(final?) of the Ip Man story, as portrayed by Donnie Yen. The martial arts scenes, musical score, and visuals don't disappoint. And priced at $12.99 from Amazon at this time of review, I gladly pre-purchased it to show my support and appreciation of the film.

Download In a Lonely Place (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray] 1080p BluRay x264 DTS-JYK

For all the praise film-noir is lavished with (quite a lot of it valid), the majority of it relies on convention as much as the standard white-picket-fence, happy-ending 'family' film does: just invert the cliches and bathe them in deep-focus shadows. While this movie, on its surface, resembles the classic-style film noir of DOUBLE INDEMNITY, beneath the surface it's a whole different animal.

No calculating evil females or tough guys masking hearts of gold populate IN A LONELY PLACE. It's a much more wrenching and powerfully disturbing film because the murder that draws the protagonists together turns out to be of peripheral importance, while the love story between Humphrey Bogart's troubled screenwriter and Gloria Grahame's B-actress spins inexorably towards damnation completely on its own power.

The basic story has him a suspect in a killing, and her in love with him yet unsure of his innocence, but director Nicholas Ray stages the proceedings so that WE see it's not the murder that disturbs her but her own conviction that his self-destructive and volatile nature will destroy them both. To his credit, Ray never takes the easy way out of having Bogart turn monster on her.

You care inordinately about the characters, hoping hard (as Bogart's agent does in the film) that some transforming moment will come that will spare these people and allow their deeply felt love to flourish and heal them both - even as the evidence before your own eyes tells you there ain't no way. For 1950 -hell, for any year- such an unsentimental and uncompromising treatment of a tragic adult relationship is a rarity.

The shadows suffusing this excellent film come not from UFA-influenced lighting but from the Black Dahlia murder, the HUAC hearings, the death throes of old Hollywood & the moral and spiritual detachment of postwar American life. But most of all, they're projected from within the characters themselves. Grahame and Ray's own real-life deteriorating relationship formed the template for the doomed lovers, and for them, this film is an act of great courage.

For his part, Bogart (the star and executive producer) takes elements of all his previous romantic loners and blends them with the harsh, sour pigments of Fred C Dobbs, running the risk of audience rejection. His performance is unflinchingly honest, among his best work ever.

After moving to a small town, Zach Cooper finds a silver lining when he meets next door neighbor Hannah, the daughter of bestselling Goosebumps series author R.L. Stine. Stine is very strange and mysterious and it turns out for good reason. He is a prisoner of his own imagination – the monsters that his books made famous are real, and Stine protects his readers by keeping them locked up in their books. When Zach unintentionally unleashes the monsters from their manuscripts and they begin to terrorize the town, it’s suddenly up to Stine, Zach, and Hannah to get all of them back in the books where they belong.

Goosebumps could have gone terribly wrong. Another blast from the past turned into a new hopeful Hollywood franchise. However, this one is actually quite a good family film. Holy cow! It is a good family film, because it is a mix of humor adults and children will find funny and adventure and scares that will amuse adults and thrill the kids. Really, I am betting that we are seeing here a family movie tradition that will live on for years to come as one of the core movies people watch at Halloween! And why not? It is great fun.

The first hour of the movie will really be the best for most adults. There is a story going on here with characters that you like and care about. What’s fascinating is that they are funny and spooky and mysterious not just to kids but also to parents. Then Jack Black arrives.

Now, I am a Jack Black fan. That being said, I have definitely seen him go overboard and get a little too hammy in films. Nothing of the sort happens here. He is reeled in and gives one of the more subtly funny roles of his career. I loved it!

The last half hour of the movie does turn a bit into a typical horror/action movie with lots of running from monsters. However, Goosebumps manages to do what we have seen done before in a fun way that makes us forgive the repetition. Plus, there are some great little twists in here that keeps it pretty entertaining.

All in all, you could do far worse at a family movie outing. If you are looking for your new Halloween tradition, you may have just scored a big one in Goosebumps!

Download How to be Single [Blu-ray + DVD + Digital HD] 1080p BluRay x264 DTS-JYK

"There's a right way to be single, and a wrong way" say the ads for How to be Single, a film which arrives on Valentine's Day weekend and, shockingly, isn't about trying to find that perfect love. While it's nice to not have another Nicholas Sparks romance to wrestle with, pushing tired notions of what a true storybook romance is supposed to look like, a film like How to be Single isn't much better.

Extolling the virtues of flying solo is perfectly fine and a welcome change, but it's obvious the screenwriters, adapting the book by Liz Tuccillo, have no idea how to do that without falling back on the clichés they claim to be against.

Perhaps this isn't really the fault of director Christian Ditter or the writers, but Tuccillo, who helped present the glossiest view of Manhattan female singlehood ever with Sex and the City, and compounded the problem with her most popular book, He's Just Not That Into You, which became an insufferable movie a lot like How to be Single.

The film certainly has a talented cast of female stars to navigate the dating scene with humor and what little depth of emotion they're given to work with. Dakota Johnson plays Alice, who decides she needs a break from her loyal boyfriend (Nicholas Braun) because she's never really been single. It's a chance for her to find out who she really is, but immediately upon experiencing what being single means, she hates it.

Enter Rebel Wilson as the hard-partying Robin, who never goes home and certainly never goes home alone. She's like an evil Jiminy Cricket guiding Alice through the worst possible decisions on the dating scene, like sleeping with pretty much any dude who will have her. Not that Alice does that (at first), but she does bed down with Tom (Anders Holm), a promiscuous bartender the ladies call a "palette cleanser" after a long-term relationship has ended.

But Tom has his eyes on Lucy (Alison Brie), one of those phony Hollywood rom-com characters who sits around and analyzes what love is through algorithms and chemical formulas. From the moment we see her sitting alone at the bar we know exactly where her storyline will go. The same goes for Leslie Mann's character, Meg, Alice's hard-working sister who desperately wants to have a baby right now. But soon after getting pregnant through IMF, she meets the perfect guy (Jake Lacy, who stuck around through an abortion in Obvious Child) who is nice enough to buy her hot chocolate and Christmas trees. Awwww shucks.

What the film is trying to say is actually quite admirable, that being single is an opportunity to grow and learn to love oneself, because it's the only way to ever find true love with someone else. Alice's attempts to love others prove to be messy, but the film doesn't fully commit. For example, Damon Wayans Jr. plays a widowed father Alice dates, only to have him get cold feet because of concerns for his young daughter.

We never see a single moment of their relationship; the film skips ahead three months right at the beginning, but we're expected to care when they break up. Why should we? The same goes for Alice and Robin's friendship, which is nothing more than nights out partying, flings with random dudes, and...that's it. When a wedge is driven between the two ladies it's tough to really know what they're arguing about. It's like they're arguing about some other movie we weren't privy to.

Johnson and Wilson are terrific, though, which is why it's such a shame they don't have better material. Both women have proven more than capable of rising above films that don't really deserve them, and in this case How to be Single deserves to be alone.

Toy Story
There is greatness in a film that can be discussed, dissected, and talked about late into the night. Then there is genius that is right in front of our faces--you smile at the spell it puts you into and are refreshed, and not a word needs to be spoken. This kind of entertainment is what they used to call "movie magic" and there is loads of it in this irresistible computer animation feature. Just a picture of these bright toys on the cover of Toy Story looks intriguing as it reawakens the kid in us. Filmmaker John Lasseter's shorts illustrate not only a technical brilliance but also a great sense of humour--one in which the pun is always intended. Lasseter thinks of himself as a storyteller first and an animator second, much like another film innovator, Walt Disney. Lasseter's story is universal and magical: what do toys do when they're not played with? Cowboy Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks), Andy's favourite bedroom toy, tries to calm the other toys (some original, some classic) during a wrenching time of year--the birthday party, when newer toys may replace them. Sure enough, Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) is the new toy that takes over the throne. Buzz has a crucial flaw, though--he believes he's the real Buzz Lightyear, not a toy. Bright and cheerful, Toy Story is much more than a 90-minute commercial for the inevitable bonanza of Woody and Buzz toys. Lasseter further scores with perfect voice casting, including Don Rickles as Mr. Potato Head and Wallace Shawn as a meek dinosaur. The director-animator won a special Oscar "For the development and inspired application of techniques that have made possible the first feature-length computer-animated film". In other words, this movie is great. --Doug Thomas
