Season 4 of House of Cards put its foot on the pedal and never lets go. Frank Underwood is now President of the United States, and as such, the most powerful man in the world. Nevertheless, he's challenged by other powerful figures who seek to undermine his strength and exploit his past. His rival in the democratic primaries and the republican front runners are two such characters, along with reporters seeking to uncover how he rose to power. On top of this all is his wife, a woman who equals Frank in cold calculation and merciless magnetism and is trying to pave her own path away from her controlling husband.
The third season left you hanging with a powerful cliffhanger that rivals the previous two seasons endings, and has you open mouthed wondering what could possibly happen in the next season and how will the characters evolve with the changing dynamics. The evolution of Frank and Claire, along with other supporting characters in this season is much greater than the previous seasons. Watching the characters overcome strife and become stronger as a result is almost as entertaining as watching Frank Underwood dismantle anyone who stands in his way.
House of Cards shows how high you can reach for power and how low you can dig to keep it. A cunning, ruthless strategist and an endless cast of strong, female characters makes this one of my favorite shows.
Frank is a character that you will love as much as you hate. His despicable methods of using those around him for his personal gain leave you wondering how you can respect him, while his charismatic bravado and go-getter approach to always solving even the stickiest of messes keeps you admiring him. He's the perfect double-edged sword of a character.
Claire, being the persistent female lead and the better half to her husband in the show, Frank, is the embodiment of a sexy assassin. She knows she's attractive, but that isn't her sole or primary weapon. With her callous personality, she mirrors Frank's relentless demeanor and uses her mind and her verbosity to charm her opponents. Claire's consistent challenger though is her husband, and this is clearly a tough match battling her love for her husband with her personal ambitions - not to mention dealing with her counterpart in ruthless ego.
Every character in this show is balanced with their own nuances, struggles, and intimate details that make them seem human and personal. The show deals with gay and bisexuality, depression, anxiety, drug and alcohol abuse, feminism, cultural barriers and struggles, and the plethora of nerve-wrecking presidential problems presented.
Every year, I rewatch the previous seasons to gear up for the upcoming season of House of Cards, and it never gets any less thrilling. I highly recommend the show to anyone who loves thrilling drama and stimulating intellect.
